Occupational safety and health and standardization: between global harmonization and national interests

Symposium marking 30 years of KAN

12/13 November 2024 in Berlin

KAN will be marking its 30th anniversary by joining with OSH stakeholders in examining current developments in standardization policy and their impact on KAN's work.

The first part of the event will focus on the political significance of standardization. Only a few years ago, the desire for global harmonization was still the prime mover of international standardization activity. Now, however, standardization is being used by many countries as a strategic instrument for pursuing their own national economic and socio-political interests. Conflicts are evident: between standardization activity that is becoming more and more international and expansive in the scope of its subject-matter on the one hand, and the European legal and standardization system, for example, on the other.

In the second part of the event, KAN and its stakeholders will discuss the potential impacts of these developments on the interaction between occupational safety and health and standardization. How can KAN bring its strengths to bear in this context? What expectations do its various stakeholders have? How do we exploit the potential for cooperation with other stakeholders?
