AI Regulation published in the EU official journal

Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 12 July 2024.

The regulation will enter into force on the 20th day following its publication, i.e. on 1 August 2024.

It will apply from 2 August 2026, with some exceptions set out in Article 113: 

  • Chapter I (General provisions) and Chapter II (Prohibited AI practices) apply from 2 February 2025;
  • Chapter III Section 4 (Notifying authorities and notified bodies), Chapter V (General-purpose AI models), Chapter VII (Governance), Chapter XII (Penalties) and Article 78 (Confidentiality) apply from 2 August 2025, except for Article 101 (Fines for providers of general-purpose AI models);
  • Article 6 (1) governing the conditions for classification as high-risk AI systems and the corresponding obligations in the AI Regulation apply from 2 August 2027.
