The German Ordinance on noise and vibration protection addresses the noise to which the workers are exposed. The exposure, i.e. the noise level at the ear, is the decisive factor rather than the emitted noise level. This noise is caused by emissions from the machines, but may differ substantially from the exposure of the worker owing to the addition of further sources of sound, the distance from the source, and deflection.
